The Great Ocean Road follows the coast from Anglesea to Warnambool. The water is very clean and clear and has big waves for the surfers (they're out there in winter in dry suits). On the other side of the road are mountains of rock cliffs and temperate rainforests. The bird population is immense and diverse. After leaving Apollo Bay, we followed the coast to Port Fairy. Along the way are several natural features that we had to stop at. These were mostly rock (sandstone) formations that were once part of the coast and have eroded to arches. Some of the arches have eroded farther to pinnacles standing in the sea. This area is known as Shipwreck Coast. These are some pretty incredible sights. You can't see all the Apostles from one place, some are hidden by cliffs farther down the coast so it takes several stops. There are boardwalks all around the area to give you several viewpoints. One of our favorite signs that was painted on a trash can said "Smokers, this is a national treasure, not your friggin' ashtray." This is interesting because the "London Bridge" actually fell into the sea in January 1990 and left the arch standing alone. Two people were stranded on the arch portion when the bridge collapsed and had to be rescued by helicopter. Home Apollo Bay Shipwreck Coast Port Fairy Grampian Nat'l Park |
