| In August 2000 (just before the Olympics) we had an opportunity to visit Australia for business and pleasure. Australia has 7 states and is about the size of the United States. The state of Victoria is in the southwest region of the country. Since Australia is below the equator, it was late winter/early spring at this time. The weather is very mild, around 40° - 50°F, no snow, a little rain, and in general beautiful. It is also the off season for tourism. Australians are on the metric system and like England, they drive on the left (wrong) side of the road. The first few days of this is rather nerve racking but after a while you get used to it. Our first destination was Melbourne for business then we rented a car and drove the Great Ocean Road along the coast to Port Fairy. From there we headed north to the Grampians National Park and then circled through the Goldfields of Victoria to Melbourne to catch the plane back to the U.S. The plane ride is long but certainly worth the trip. As usual, we didn't have a set route we followed. Instead, we talked to people along the way and found their favorite places. The people are wonderful and love their homeland. They are more than willing to tell you their secret spots or anything else you want to know. For example when we were leaving Melbourne, we got lost getting out of the city (not unusual). We stopped to ask someone directions to get to the Western Highway to Geelong. The couple we talked to couldn't decide the best possible route to get us there so they got in their car and led us out of the city. These are nice people. We would like to share a few pictures from our driving tour. Since we are not big on shopping and tourist traps these photos will be of the scenery. Hope you enjoy.
