From Port Fairy we drove north to Halls Gap and the Grampians National Park. We made a couple stops along the way. One at Mt. Eccels, an extinct volcano, and the town of Hamilton, the wool-bale capital. Halls Gap is a small town in the mountains. Flocks of cockatoos and parrots created a racket in the trees. One cockatoo is loud; a flock is deafening. We drove farther
up in the mountains from Halls Gap and took a hike to see Springbank Falls.
The falls drop thirty feet or so, but there is no pool at the bottom.
The water goes underground at the base of the falls and the stream comes
out several hundred yards down hill. Zumstein was our last stop in the Grampians before heading back to Melbourne. Our friends in the T-shirt shop in Warrnambool told us about it when we said we hadn't seen any kangaroos yet. It is a small wildlife area where kangaroos feed at dawn and dusk. We were there around noon and saw nothing. Disappointed, we decided to have lunch at a picnic ground across the road. There we found a mother and joey feeding. Mom was OK about Bill taking her picture but wasn't too happy about him getting close to her baby. We also had avian guests for lunch who were quite persistent.
